The focus of this WP’s work reflects recent developments in national and European legislation, new requirements and deadlines to further develop the collection, sorting, treatment and material recovery of biodegradable waste. The work schedule and planned results were designed to meet the requirements of the sponsor and to present current and expected industry trends, potential benefits but also risks (e.g. associated with the composition of input materials, or contamination of waste materials) in recycling. The WP brings together three waste groups – food waste, sewage sludge and other biodegradable waste, of which the processes for collecting, sorting and treating them, including their analysis, will be identified and described in relation to material flows, their possible environmental impacts will be monitored and the process optimisation proposed. In the part on sewage sludge, it will work closely with the WP 1.B and 2.A. In the area of further development and prioritisation, options for the application of approaches and new, so-called “emerging techniques” that develop the framework of the BAT currently in use will be monitored, tested and assessed. Attention will also be paid to research and development in the processing of BROs into compost outputs capable of promoting water retention in soil and replenishing organic matter, taking into account the possible transport of priority hazardous substances.
